A website is claiming to know the “real reason” Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber skipped the Grammys. The on-and-off couple is even accused of lying about why they didn’t attend the awards show. But the story is not true, and Gossip Cop can bust it.
“Bad Liar! The Real Reason Selena & Justin Skipped The Grammys,” RadarOnline is blaring in a headline on Monday. The beginning of the article points out that it was said Bieber was skipping the Grammys to work on a new album and that he was a “no-show” despite three nominations. But the site then alleges “the real reason the duo did not attend was so they would avoid a run-in with her estranged ex.”
A so-called “source” is quoted as saying, “Justin and Selena both were well aware of the fact that her ex The Weeknd was nominated for a Grammy, and they also knew that he would probably win.” This supposed snitch goes on to allege, “They are doing everything they can to avoid The Weeknd because neither of them knows how to approach it if they do see him.” But there are obvious flaws with these allegations.
The Weeknd did win Best Urban Contemporary Album for Starboy, but he didn’t attend the award show. Furthermore, that category wasn’t handled during the main telecast. Rather, it announced, as the vast majority of honors were, during the Premiere Ceremony. So it doesn’t make sense to claim Bieber and Gomez were assuming they’d run into him. It is also illogical to imply the singer-actress will avoid award ceremonies just prevent seeing her ex.
. Bieber actually hasn’t attended any award shows since May of 2016, when he candidly spoke about the discomfort he felt at the Billboard Music Awards. “I don’t feel good when I’m there nor after,” he explained in an Instagram post at the time.
Since then, Bieber hasn’t participated in not just the Grammys, but also the iHeart Radio Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, the American Music Awards or last year’s Billboard Music Awards. Of course, The Weeknd had nothing to do with his decision to abstain from any of those events, so it’s a bit far-fetched to claim he’s now the “real reason” Bieber didn’t go to this particular ceremony. As for Gomez, since she wasn’t a nominee, presenter, or performer, it’s not exactly strange that she opted to pass on the event, especially as she’s working on new music.
But rather than report the readily-available truth, the outlet spurned facts to put a sensational, even scandalous, spin on things. Gossip Cop would also be remiss not to point out that RadarOnline was completely wrong when it claimed Bieber was going to propose to Gomez over Christmas. With that in mind, here’s our proposal to the online publication: Get better sources.
